The LA Lakers is perhaps the most loved and the most hated team in NBA history. Most of us have witnessed most of the great moments of LA history right in our own living rooms if not in the game arena itself where many championship streaks were achieved and game winning clutch shots that have left us on the edge of our seats. There have been players in the LA Lakers teams throughout the years that have etched their names in the annals of the sports. LA Lakers, with their famous purple and gold uniforms have entertained us, made up jump for joy, made us cry, and made many memorable moments that we can always remember with warmth in our hearts.
Below are just a few of the many memorable moments in the life of the LA Lakers. For LA fans out there, both in years past up to the present, these moments will forever be remembered with fondness.
The Lakers got their name from the many lakes of Minnesota. The LA Lakers was born in 1960 when they relocated the LA from Minnesota and this became the move in history that would forever change the game of basketball. From there, fans from all over the world would follow the Lakers to become one the most loved and supported teams the NBA would ever see.
1979 was a great year when Jerry Buss bought the team and made it what it is today. The height of this ownership was the drafting of Magic Johnson, who was very instrumental in making the LA Lakers a force to be reckoned with in the court.
Even disappointments and failures in the teams history can be considered something memorable as well. In 1991, the NBA world was shocked to receive news of Magic Johnsons retirement from basketball after finding out that he had HIV. Following the retirement of Magic Johnson, the team declined in their performance in the following years.
Kobe Bryant, fresh out of high school and who was to be the greatest player in Lakers history, was drafted in 1996. In the 1996 draft, Charlotte Hornets picked Kobe Bryant at no 13 but immediately traded him for Vlade Divac to the LA Lakers. This trade would change the history of the LA Lakers and the whole NBA as well.
The one-two punch Kobe- Shaq team was one of the greatest in the NBA. In 1996, Shaq a free agent, signed up with LA Lakers. Although Shaq and Kobe had many differences, the two rebuilt the brand and reputation of the team, winning the NBA championships for 3 consecutive years from 2000 to 2002.
Kobe scored 81 points against the Toronto raptors in 2006.
Other moments include the back to back championships in 2009 and 2010, the injury and retirement of Kobe Bryant, and the signing up of LeBron James.
